Wheatgrass Smoothies

On January 26, I visited Northrop Frye Elementary which is a K-8 school in Moncton, New Brunswick. I spoke to five grade 2 classes for a total of 105 students. In each class I presented for about an hour, we chatted about where food comes from, what grows in gardens locally, what plants need to grow to produce tasty food for us to eat, and then we planted some wheatgrass seeds into small paper pots. The teachers from each class planted in large clear plastic pots so they could observe the vast root systems of the wheatgrass. It was great to see their enthusiasm. They took very good care of their plants and when I returned on February 6, I was amazed at how well the students did in growing their plants. Most of the plants were 10cm+. It was a Friday morning and the students were excited to try a wheatgrass smoothie, so I went around to all five classes again and with help from their fantastic teachers, we made some tasty smoothies with their wheatgrass, berries, milk, and honey. It was great to see how excited they were and to see how proud they were in trying something totally new to the majority of them. It was nutritious, tasty, and something that they grew together! Way to go Northrup Frye!
