Students Learn By Doing!

Having taught science for a number of years, it soon became apparent to me that students learn best by participating in activities. As a result, I feel that the hands on activities found in the NFL curriculum definitely leave the students with a greater appreciation of agricultural science. What is also great about the activities is that they do not require a lot of prep time or expense, and are easy to follow – a teacher’s dream!

Whenever I have students participate in the activities, some are always hesitant to ’dive in’ and get their hands dirty. However, after watching their peers working away, they soon start to become involved and find themselves enjoying the experience. I always let the students know that even if the results are not what you expect, you are still learning the process. Relax, enjoy yourselves, and don’t worry if things go wrong! One can always evaluate and try to understand the reason behind the unexpected results.
