Old Stomping Grounds

On February 10, I visited my old high school, Bathurst High. It has been many years since I walked through those doors! It was interesting to go back because it was at this very school where I was inspired by my science teacher to pursue a career in agriculture all those years ago. Mrs. Walker invited me to talk to her three grade 11 biology classes (80 students). This was my first time talking to high school students. We did lessons five from the curriculum and we discussed how we are going to continue to feed the ever-growing population. We snacked on apples as I explained the lesson. They were shocked to learn that we only have 1/32 of the total earth’s surface to grow food. We discussed how little soil we have on earth to sustain our ever-hungry planet and ourselves. We had some great conversations on local food, farmers markets, growing food, sustainability, and the ever-controversial GMO’s. It was great to hear their views on agriculture; I was truly impressed by their knowledge on the subject. Thank you to Mrs. Walker and Bathurst High School for inviting me in to talk to their students.
