Northrop Frye’s Tasty Spuds

On Tuesday March 31, all the grade 2 students at Northrop Frye School in Moncton New Brunswick, became potato growers! They wanted to try growing some tasty vegetables in their fantastically lite atrium in pots. We decided to plant a very early variety of potatoes called, “Eramosa” and they will be able to harvest the new potatoes before school gets out. We met class by class and each student helped fill the pots with soil, they added the potato seed pieces in the pots, covered them with soil, watered them and added some plant nutrients to help make them grow to their full potential. After each of the very large pots were planted, each student was able to plant a potato seed piece to take home and grow! They were all amazed to learn that new potatoes are grown from an actual potato that simply had been cut up. We watched a video on how potatoes are grown on a large scale potato farm and we discussed how important the potato crop is to New Brunswick. I will keep you posted on our progress! I would like to Thank, Cavendish Agri Services in Salisbury NB for their donation of fertilizer and recommendation, as well as Omer Vienneau Farms in Saint Andre Leblanc for the donation to this great school project!
