Small Beginnings, West Kent Elementary School

West Kent Elementary School is a local school in the heart of Charlottetown who established a community garden three years ago under the leadership of the Grade 3 teacher and class. These gardens are called Small Beginnings and every Spring, students plant seeds and grow plants in their Grade 3 classroom as part of their science curriculum.

“Small Beginnings” provides an exciting real-world context for our learning and is used as an opportunity to recruit and spark the interest of other younger inspiring gardeners. The Grade 3 students visit primary students in various classes and teach them how to plant seeds. Each summer, families volunteer to become a Garden Caretaker. During this time, all families in the community are encouraged to pick ripe and ready vegetables to enjoy with their families. Oftentimes, these gardens are an opportunity for children in the school community to try a new vegetable, such as a zucchini, that might not otherwise have tried. Even the pickiest of eaters cannot refuse to try a delicious zucchini loaf.

Our school would like to expand and grow this valuable learning opportunity within our community, providing children access and the opportunity to grow vegetables within a city dwelling.
