Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?
Garden is 6 raised beds and green house.
What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?
Carrots, tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers, squash, peppers. Had a hard time growing cucumbers.
Why did your school decide to add a school garden?
We wanted a garden that special needs children could access.
What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?
Culinary technology and grade 10 reading workshop.
Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?
Teachers but we have plans to develop a garden coop for students and parents.
What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?
Most went to cul tech. We made salsa and had a party with special needs students.
Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?
We have a garden committee made up of students, parents and teachers. We are in the process of developing a community garden coop. We are moving the raised beds indoors and trying to grow veggies this winter.
What are your future plans for the school garden?
We would like to have 10 raised beds and have parents and students develop a garden cooperative.
Any words of encouragement/tips for a school starting a school garden?
Do a needs assessment to determine student/ parent interest. Have administration on side and willing to develop a course around the garden.
