About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

This grant was used to purchase a free standing shelving unit and grow lights to continue our growing during the winter months.

What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?

We grew micro-greens, lettuce, and tomatoes in our garden. The micro-greens did very well, but the tomatoes and lettuce took much longer to mature. The lettuce needed to be thinned which we didn't do, but we're not sure why the tomatoes didn't do well.

Why did your school decide to add a school garden?

To teach students about where their food comes from and to encourage them to try new foods.

What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?

Grade 2s during science, social studies, and ESD classes,

Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?

Mrs, Halland manages it day to day; as this grant was used for and indoor garden it is not used over the summer. We use our Green Space over the summer, which Mrs. Halland manages.

What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?

We tried some of it as a class and some we put in the school wide stone soup day.

Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?

No we do not have other volunteers. We do not need other funding for this garden but have accessed for our outdoor garden.

What are your future plans for the school garden?

We will grow plants over the winter again after Christmas.
