Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?
Our garden is in the ground.
What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?
We are just in the initial stages of building our garden. We have hopes to grow vegetables/fruits in the near future.
Why did your school decide to add a school garden?
We had a wide open space that was not being used and teachers that believed in the importance of environmental stewardship and outdoor education.
What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?
All classes from Kindergarten to Grade 6 have participated in the garden in a wide range of subject areas: literacy, math, music, science, etc.
Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?
Our school council members as well as staff have managed the garden over the summer months. Our students (and staff) have taken ownership in assisting to the garden during the school year.
What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?
We have not harvested from our garden as of yet...however have plans once our garden is more established.
Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?
Our school council have helped with initial funding for our garden. It's members have also helped with watering/weeding during the summer months.
What are your future plans for the school garden?
We have plans to expand to edible items as well: fruit trees, bushes, vegetables, etc. We are also planning to add items such as raised beds and a tool shed. Of course our future plans include maintaining our garden and adding more plants as needed.
