About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

Raised beds, geodesic dome.

What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?

Pretty much everything. From leafy greens to root veg to tomatoes melons and cakes. Everything grows pretty well.

Why did your school decide to add a school garden?

A teacher (Fontaine) decided to use his lunch hours productively and create a Common learning space for both students and faculty.

What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?

Our grade 10 to 12 horticultural class uses the space primarily. It is frequently visited by the food nutrition class, the special education department, and the alternative learning centre.

Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?

The teacher and the students manage the garden on a daily basis during school year, and this year we hired a student to look after it in the summer time.

What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?

We donate most of the food to the refugee families that attend the school. The foods and nutrition class also use some of the produce in their cooking labs.

Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?

We have not involved the community as of yet, but is on the long-term plans to do so.

What are your future plans for the school garden?

We would like to develop year-round gardening for the school. Complete with vermi composting aquaponics, hydroponics, vertical gardening, and other exploratory forms of gardening.
