About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

This spring we started planning for our school garden. A group of volunteer parents met and planned what the garden would look like. In April we held a work bee where we cleaned up an existing serenity garden and built 3 raised garden boxes and planted Saskatoons and pollinator species, we also attempted to grow and sunflower house. Students were involved with the work bee as well as planting watering and caring for the garden. Despite the hot dry temperatures dedicated volunteers watered the garden throughout the summer. The sunflower house did not do great but the raised bed flourished. Bird houses and a bee house were put up around the school grounds. The bird houses were painted by the students. The students enjoyed the garden and were engaged in spending time in the garden watering and weeding. Students learned how lack of water can negatively impact a plants growth. There was abundant learning on how to properly mark the seeds that were planted and proper spacing.
Students also took interest in. As this was the first year of having a garden, and the complexities of COVID the garden was not used to it's fullest. We look forward to planning more as to the educational learnings in the garden this upcoming spring.

What are your future plans for the school garden?

There are plans to expand the garden next year with 3 more raised beds, a weather station, storage shed and an outdoor classroom pavilion.
