Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?
The Brunswick garden is still under construction, with the money from this grant we have purchased 8 large barrel planters. These will be placed around our outdoor learning gazebo and the plan is that students will participate in planting veggies once spring comes.
What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?
As the garden is new to this school we have not yet had the chance to plant anything but our barrel planters will be in place so that veggies can be planted come spring.
Why did your school decide to add a school garden?
We feel that this is a wonderful hands on learning experience for our students and also that it will enhance the environment of our outdoor learning area.
What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?
Unsure at this time, hopefully all classes will be able to utilize the space in some way.
Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?
Myself (Outreach Worker at the school) or Mr. White the Principal would manage the garden day to day. A plan has not yet been established for the summer months.
What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?
A plan for this has not yet been established but our hope would be to either donate food items or to partner with some of our low income families and have them harvest the veggies.
Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?
At this time we have not sought out community or parental involvement but we will be doing so when seeking donations of dirt and seeds/plants for the garden.
What are your future plans for the school garden?
We would like to see this garden space continue to grow.
Any words of encouragement/tips for a school starting a school garden?
My encouragement would be to not wait for money or grants but to go out to local businesses and greenhouses looking for support. I think parents and community members are looking for opportunities like this to support their local schools.
