Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?
The funds were spent to help purchase the garden tower and supplies needed. Parts were missing when the tower first arrived so we are behind but there is still a lot of excitement especially seeing the first seeds sprout.
What grade levels worked in the garden and did you or another teacher link some of your curriculum outcomes to the garden?
* 9- 12
* Commercial cooking and Indigenous studies curriculum outcomes
What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?
We currently planted different types of lettuce and herbs but have plans to grow plants and a variety of herbs and vegetables.
Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?
Staff and students - there is a growing team as we move forward.
What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?
We will be using it in culinary classes and our Indigenous studies classes to start.
The culinary classes had a garden tower on loan and used it so much - this is where the idea came from to apply for a grant to get our own tower for the school.
Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?
We were able to get a gran from the City of Saskatoon and hope to grow the garden tower project as we move forward and experiment growing a variety plants and vegetables.
What are your future plans for the school garden?
To grow plants to green the school and to grow herbs for Indigenous studies class and food for the commercial cooking class.
We really want to experiment with what we can grow and learn and educate the students about food.
