Crystal City, Manitoba
We operate a u-pick/we-pick strawberry farm outside of Crystal City in Southern Manitoba. We planted our first crop of strawberries this spring and are anticipating our first harvest in the summer of 2022!
Why do you grow this produce?
There is a limited supply of strawberry producers in the local area.
What makes your location (or greenhouse) ideal for these crops?
The land was previously used for animal grazing and is high in nutrients.
Where do you market your produce?
We will sell our produce directly to the customer on the farm.
How long have you and your family produced fruits and vegetables?
This is our first year. Looking forward to our first crop in 2022!
How many acres/hectares/square feet (in the case of greenhouses) do you crop?
Approximately one acre with plans to expand in the coming years.
What sustainability and technology practices do you use in your operation to grow your crops to their fullest potential?
We use subsurface drip irrigation to take the water directly to the roots of the plants where it is needed. This helps to elimate surface evaporation of the water.
What advice would you give someone who wants to start growing their own fruits and vegetables at home?
Do your research. Don't be afraid to reach out to other experienced farmers/producers.
Tell the world why you farm. Do you have any words you'd like to share with studentsabout agriculture.
To supply the area with a product that isn't locally grown in large supply. It sure is rewarding to watch the growth and evolution of your crop!
Do you have a favourite recipe using the produce you grow?
Homemade strawberry ice cream.
