As the official education partner of the Scotts Canada GRO1000 program, Nutrients for Life provides the winning showcase garden with hands-on assistance throughout the planning process, as well as by educating students who will use the space on the importance of soil science and agricultural sustainability.
The GRO1000 program is Scotts Canada’s commitment to create over 1,000 community gardens and green spaces in Canada, the U.S., and Europe by 2018, the company’s 150th anniversary. To date, there are 43 GRO1000 community gardens in Canada, providing over 50,800 youth with experiential learning and hands-on lessons with nature.
Princess Elizabeth School in Saint John, New Brunswick, was awarded the 2016 Showcase Garden Grant to develop their sustainable community garden and green space to help students and their community reconnect with agriculture. With this grant, their newly-launched garden will encourage youth to discover how their food went from farm to fork in a hands-on and educational manner.
Since 2011, over 700 grants have been awarded globally. Scotts Canada has partnered with Communities in Bloom, Plants a Row – Grow a Row, and Nutrients for Life with the aim of bringing together national and local groups to collectively advocate for and demonstrate the benefits of gardening and green space development.
