Smoothies At Northrop Frye

The Grade 2¹s at Northrop Frye School were very fortunate this year to have partnered up with Tamara Sealy from Nutrients for Life. They had the opportunity to learn about about agriculture in a whole new way, creating food in their own homes and yards that was sustainable! Their first experience was learning about seeds and the sustainability of different crops. To model this Tamara helped them to grow wheat grass in a cup. She showed how easily students could grow a plant from seed in with only a cup and soil. We discussed what plants need to survive and then had Tamara return to make Smoothies with the students using the wheat grass. It was a big hit and “yummy.” The next adventure was potatoes! Tamara supported this project bringing in the supplies for an indoor potato garden for each class. The students learned about how potatoes crops are planted, need nutrients, are hilled, and cultivated! Each student also got to take home their own potato cutting to grow a plant at home. This was such an engaging activity for the class as students were responsible throughout the weeks to water, hill, and add nutrients to the pots to help the potato grow. Tamara was wonderful to check in with the students frequently to help with the growing and to answer any questions. The potato plants grew extremely well and there was talk throughout the school about these plants with many older students asking questions as well. As learning experiences sometimes go, the end results were not as expected. No potatoes were grown and the students learned more about the effects of nutrients and how the potatoes used their energy to grow tall rather than below the soil. Many were successful with their home plants flowering so we are hopeful that some students will be enjoying fresh potatoes this summer! This was a great learning experience for both the students and teachers at NFS and we look forward to partnering with Tamara and Nutrients for Life again!
