NFL Learning Gardens In Full Bloom

Nutrients for Life learning gardens have been actively growing in popularity, learnings, and in plantings over the last few months as the interest in building on the need for ”hands on” experimental learning about soil science, plant biology, food sustainability, and nutrients have been growing themselves with classrooms. Not to mention the excitement of students being able to take their classroom and their learnings into the great outdoors. Nutrients for Life Canada has been working in partnership with Green Manitoba to make these gardens and their learnings grow. To date the Nutrients for Life Learning Garden program has granted eight schools in the Maritimes each with $500.00 to get their gardens off the ground or to expand them in the past month. In addition a number of schools in Western and Central Canada have also been actively applying this year and are currently being approved, nine schools in Manitoba have already been approved.

Benefits of Nutrients For Life Learning Gardens

The purpose of the learning gardens is to help students explore and experience the science behind food production. Based on the Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century curriculum these learning gardens can provide a number of benefits:

- Creates a connection between sustainable agriculture and the food people eat.
- Provides experimental learning between existing curriculum subjects such as chemistry, biology, math, social studies, history, english, and help to bring thesis subjects to life.
- Provides a hand’s on opportunity for students in topics such as soil testing, microbial community function and analysis through composting, and nutrient availability.
- Offers opportunities for students to connect not only with nature but connect with a natural mentor teaching about the outdoors.
- Allow the students to grow with the garden in helping them succeed in school and life towards choosing healthy food options, and in building healthy green communities.
- And many, many more!
