New Hamburg, Ontario
Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?
The garden is in the ground.
Why did your school decide to add a school garden?
Our existing garden was overgrown with weeds and spreading perennials. The grant defrayed the cost of a garden refresh by a local contractor.
What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?
Grade 5 and 6 classes participate. No subjects are taught. Teachers and student have contributed to weeding and garden maintenance.
Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?
Our custodian, teachers and students maintain the garden day to day. Next summer we will recruit parents and community members to help.
What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?
Nothing is harvested
Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?
We plan to connect with parent and community volunteers for maintence. We invited familes to contribute perennial cuttings and will do so again in the spring. The school has raided funds for greening and this partially supported the garden refresh by a local contractor.
What are your future plans for the school garden?
This refresh provides a new foundation for ongoing maintenance and future community involvement.
