About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

The funds were used to purchase an indoor grow system, a book on plants, soil pellets, garden gloves, landscape fabric, planters, plant labels, soil, and plants.

What grade levels worked in the garden and did you or another teacher link some of your curriculum outcomes to the garden?

The grow system was for Grade 7-8

One outdoor garden was for Grad 3-4

The other outdoor garden was for Garden Club members (grade 4 and up)

Other items were used for a nature based family literacy night. Families were invited to the school for many activities. One of the stations was planting a take home garden.

Yes! Curriculum outcomes were linked with the garden.

What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?

We planted lots of different vegetables! Tomato, squash, radish, pumpkins, cucumber, bean, carrots, chard, turnip, lettuces, and more.

The plants all grew but most did not produce fruit. The tomatoes, and chard did the best. The squash/cucumber/pumpkin had a million flowers but no produce.

What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?

Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?

Members of summer success and volunteer parents and staff.

What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?

The students enjoy the harvest. Not enough for classes of donating.

Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?

We do not have community involvement, outside of parents. I have not yet looked for further funding for this project.

What are your future plans for the school garden?

Plant in the spring and hope it survives the summer! 😊
