About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

We have raised garden beds and a hydroponic garden. We will grow herbs and start plants in the hydroponic garden before moving them outside.

What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?

We grew pumpkins, carrots and potatoes last spring and summer. Our pumpkins didn't grow as well as we hoped. We have about 4 small ones but none grew very big.

Why did your school decide to add a school garden?

For lots of hands on learning! We will continue to use these resources for many years! Thank you.

What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?

K, 1,6, 7 and high school PAA classes. Next semester this year 2026, the Sr science class will be using the hydroponic garden for part of their curriculum!

Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?

Our janitor watered our garden all summer long. In the spring before school ended it was the k, 1,6,and 7 class who spent time together taking care of it.

What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?

We don't have a big enough garden to donate our produce but the PAA classes used it in their cooking and the younger grades got to harvest and taste the produce. I also have a few pumpkins in my classroom!

Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?

We have had some community involvement, we had an elder from our community come in and take a look at the student's work while they planted. We also had many teacher interested in the project. I have recieved another grant that I will use this year so we are able to expand our garden space!

What are your future plans for the school garden?

We want to expand our garden and get vegetables and herbs planted this year so that we can sell them to the families and the community to raise money to expand our garden project.

Any words of encouragement/tips for a school starting a school garden?

Go for it! The students love learning and you can incorporate gardening into so many curriculums.
