True Success at Eel Ground School!

I first met the staff at Eel Ground late last winter when there was still 4 feet of snow on the ground, the principal, Helen Ward, was visioning of having a learning garden at her school so everyone (teachers, students and the community ) could begin to learn about food security and exactly how plants produce great and tasty food for us to eat! We talked back and forth about what they wanted, what would be easy to start and be successful. We started the season off with a school assembly where I talked to the children about agriculture and then what they were going to do together to grow an edible garden right in front of their school. Each class was responsible for 1 or 2 different vegetables that they were going to plant in their raised garden beds. We prepped the beds and had a great planting day on May 30. It was a hot and sunny day and all the students had a contributed and enjoyed being outdoors. The gardens were well cared for over the summer by staff and the community with a few incidences, but when we harvested the fruits of their labor on September 26 everyone was proud of their accomplishments and their smiles definitely showed it. Their success has given them their “Green Thumbs” and their curiosity already has them thinking about what they could plant next year! Thanks to everyone at Eel Ground School for welcoming me into their community and I have truly enjoyed working with you and l Iook forward to the future of Eel Ground’s garden!
