About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?

beans grew very well, the students loved watching them climb. Carrots and peas grew well too. Peppers and beets had a hard time. My herbs didn't fair very well either.

Why did your school decide to add a school garden?

I thought it fit in very well with my Science unit about Plants. It also gives them responsibility, and they love to watch it grow!!

What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?

Grade 2/3 and Grade 5/6 classes. Science (plants), Social, (communities), ELA (writing)

Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?

We give "jobs" out each week and we have a "gardener" as a job per week

What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?

We have a Garden Party int he Spring. We bring some extra veggies/fruit and dip and Tye-dye our T-shirts outside. It is a lot of fun!

What are your future plans for the school garden?

Maybe get another light and expand it to be bigger so we can plant more

Any words of encouragement/tips for a school starting a school garden?
