About our Garden

Please describe your garden, is it raised beds, in the ground, do you have a greenhouse?

We have three raised beds that are about 2x8 feet, and four raised boxes that are about 1x2feet.

What vegetables/fruit do you grow in your garden? What do you have a difficult time growing in your school garden?

We did not grow anything last season.

Why did your school decide to add a school garden?

We decided to add a school garden to involve students and to educate where our food comes from, and to reinforce classroom learning in a variety of subjects and involve important skills such as problem solving, planning and critical thinking. As well as giving students the responsibility of maintaining and watering the garden.

What classes participate in the garden, what subjects are taught in the garden?

The school nutrition class was responsible for the garden.

Who manages the garden day to day? Who manages the garden over the Summer break?

Students would manage the garden from day to day and myself or the janitorial staff.

What do you do with the harvest from your garden? Do you have a harvest celebration? Do you use it in the cafeteria, or culinary classes? Do you donate some of the produce?

We used some of the harvest for the students and staff and some of the harvest was given to students and staff to use.

Do you have community involvement? Do you have parents and volunteers? Have been able to source other funding to help your garden grow?

No we do not.

What are your future plans for the school garden?

Not sure.

Any words of encouragement/tips for a school starting a school garden?

Involve students on all levels of creating the garden, they will own it and be willing to care for it.
