Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century is Nutrients for Life’s full curriculum resource module on soil science and agricultural sustainability. The module targets middle- and high-school students in Canada with engaging learning materials on the important role plant nutrients play in global food security and the creation and maintenance of green spaces.
Developed in consultation with provincial education ministries, agricultural experts and leading international science textbook authors, each module meets rigorous pedagogical standards in its respective province or territory. The content was peer-reviewed and endorsed by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Science Resources Center, a world leader in scientific research and education.
Effective teaching modules
Each Nutrients for Life soil and plant science module contains six lessons:
- In Search of Essential Nutrients,
- Properties of Soil,
- Plant-Soil Interactions,
- Plant Nutrient Deficiencies,
- Plant Nutrients and the Environment, and
- Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century.
The lessons are designed to work collectively or as standalone elements. Each lesson includes an overview of objectives and major concepts, student handouts, instructional background and teaching guides.
Ongoing curriculum development
We continue to adapt Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century to meet the needs of other province and territories. French versions will soon be available.
